DAVID, MAN OF COURAGE
INTRODUCTION: Have you ever been up against something
that you thought that would be impossible to achieve? Many of life's greatest
accomplishments have been achieved because men and women refused to be
intimidated by the "impossible." David in the old testament faced a
similar problem. He had a "giant" task.
1 Samuel chapter seventeen tells us of the Israelite
army facing the Philistines and their great champion, Goliath. David was
visiting his older brothers in the camp when he first came face to face with
Goliath.
BODY
I.
WHAT IS COURAGE?
A. A definition of courage.
1. "The attitude of
facing and dealing with anything recognized as dangerous, difficult, or
painful, instead of withdrawing from it; quality of being fearless or brave;
valor." - Webster’s New World Dictionary.
2. Courage is: standing when
everyone else wants to run, speaking when everyone else is afraid to speak,
acting when everyone else is paralyzed by fear, taking action in the face of
danger, holding one’s character and moral uprightness when everyone else is
tempted to compromise theirs.
3. We need to understand
something. Everyone is afraid, at some time or other. We all experience the
emotion of fear. Courage is being able to overcome our feelings of fear and
stepping out to do when we know is right.
a. Even the great lose their
courage at times. The great Napoleon lost his once. His army was about to be
defeated and he ordered the drummer boy to sound retreat. The boy answered that
he had never been taught to sound retreat, only the charge. Napoleon regained
his courage and ordered a charge. His army won the battle.
B. Christians need courage!

when we face challenges to our faithfulness and are afraid.

afraid and answered, "Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I
will call for you."

III.
WHY WAS DAVID NOT TERRIFIED OF GOLIATH WHILE THE ENTIRE ARMY OF ISRAEL,
INCLUDING SAUL, WAS SO FEARFUL?
A. Reason Number One - because he trusted in the true and living God.

David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, "What shall be done for
the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For
who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the
living God?"

will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from
you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to

know that there is a God in Israel.’"

him.
1. 1 Samuel 17:34-37
"But David said to Saul, ‘Your servant used to keep his father's sheep,
and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, 35- I went out
after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose
against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. 36- Your
servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will
be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.’ 37-
Moreover David said, ‘The LORD, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and
from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.’

might hear. And I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. 18- And the Lord
will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom.
To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen!"

there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the
righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to
all who have loved His appearing.
C. As Christians let us have
the courage to:
1. Obey like Abraham
a. Hebrews 11:8 - By faith
Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive
as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
2. Suffer like Moses.
a. Hebrews 11:24-25 "By
faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's
daughter, 25- choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than
to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin,"
b. Romans 8:16-18 "The
Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17-
and if children, then heirs; heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if
indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. 18- For I
consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared
with the glory which shall be revealed in us."
3. Serve like Joshua.
a. Joshua 24:15 - "And
if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom
you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the
other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.
But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."
b. Matthew 6:24 - "No
one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other,
or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God
and mammon.
4. Rebuke sin like Stephen.
a. Acts 7:51-52 "You
stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy
Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you. 52- "Which of the prophets did
your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of
the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers,"
b. Jesus had to rebuke Peter
when he was wrong. "But when He had turned around and looked at His
disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, ‘Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not
mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.’" (Mark 8:33)
5. Speak the truth like
Paul.
a. He spoke the wisdom of
God, not man’s - 1 Corinthians 2:1-5.
b. We must present the Word
of God with boldness - "And for me, that utterance may be given to me,
that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20-
for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I
ought to speak" (Ephesians 6:19)
CONCLUSION:
David stood when everything told him to run. Through
faith he won a great victory for the people of God. Will we stand for God.
"Who will follow Jesus standing for the right, holding up his banner, in
the thickest fight?....who will follow Jesus, who will make reply, 'I am on the
Lord's side, Master, here am I.'"
