Lecture Objectives:

What are some Christian "wise sayings" of Jesus? In this lesson we will learn that the teachings of Jesus emphasize love for God and love for people.

Questions for Focus:

1. Jesus teaches in many different places. (In a boat, on a mountain, walking down a road, sitting in a house)

2. Jesus teaches by many different methods. (Lectures, discussion, stories, parables) Define: "parable" - to compare. It signifies a placing of one thing beside another with a view to comparison. (Vines Expository Dictionary) Jesus uses physical elements to teach spiritual truths.

3. Jesus teaches on many different topics.

4. What does Jesus emphasize in His teaching? Matthew 22.35-40

  1. JESUS TEACHES US TO LISTEN TO GOD'S WORD (Read: Luke 8.4-15)
    1. The Explanation of the Parable
      1. What does the seed represent?
      2. What does the birds represent?
      3. What does the soil represent?
    2. The Application of the Parable:
      1. Note the different descriptions of listening with each heart.
      2. The different responses to the Word.
  2. JESUS TEACHES US TO LOVE OTHER PEOPLE (Read: Luke 10.25-37)
    1. The Robbers - did not love their neighbor.

    2. The Religious Leaders - did not love their neighbor.
      1. What did the Priest and the Levite do for this man?

  3. JESUS TEACHES US TO PREPARE FOR LIFE AFTER DEATH (Read: Luke 16.19-31)
    1. There is life after death.
      1. The poor man died...
      2. List the conditions of his life after death.
    2. The rich man died...
      1. List the conditions of his life after death.
      2. Preparing for life after death.
      1. "Listen to Moses and the Prophets": Refers to reading and obeying the holy scriptures.
      2. "Even if someone rise from the dead": Refers to obeying Jesus. (Compare with Luke 9.28-36)
